Certificates

Basic Certificate in Women's Studies

The Certificate in Women’s Studies is designed for individuals who are not already enrolled at SDSU.  It offers an opportunity for adults to increase their understanding of women and gender in society and culture, and learn about the ways that women and others have lived, worked, thought, resisted, created knowledge, and engaged in cultural activism.

The Certificate is offered through the SDSU Open University, which is part of SDSU Global Campus. Register for courses and pay fees through the SDSU Global Campus site.

The Certificate Program consists of twelve units (four classes), completed with a minimum 2.75 grade point average. 

Core Curriculum

The basic requirement for a certificate is any FOUR Women’s Studies courses at the 300- or 500-level (total of 12 units). These can be taken at whatever pace, and in whatever order, works best for you. Courses can be in-person or online, or a combination of both. The certificate allows each individual to personalize their coursework. See our courses page for a complete list of. Easy Enrollment

  1. Email [email protected] to let us know you are interested. Include the following information in your email:
      • Name
      • Highest degree earned, and from where
      • Women’s studies courses of interests
  2. Complete four 300-500 level courses (12 units).

  3. Complete a certificate request form to the College of Extended Studies for certificate. Email [email protected] the courses you have completed.


Advanced Certificate in Women's Studies

This certificate is for students with B.A. degrees who want to increase their understanding of women in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The certificate program addresses diverse ways for students to develop knowledge of how women live, think, resist, create knowledge, and engage in cultural activism. 

Core Curriculum

A total of 12 units (4 classes), including

  • WMNST 590: Feminist Thought (offered every Fall)
  • Nine units (3 courses): One course may be at the 500 level, and the other two courses must be at the 600 level.

How to Apply

Students who are NOT currently enrolled as SDSU graduate student:

  1. University Online Application (Cal State Apply)
    All applicants to the program must first fill out an online application on Cal State Apply and pay the required fee before February 1. An SDSU RED ID Number will then be assigned which allows tracking of application status online.

  2. Office of Graduate Admissions Requirements
    Once you have been assigned a Red ID number, next, apply via Interfolio by February 15.
    This application will ask for general information as well as a Statement of Purpose and your unofficial transcripts.
    We do not require GRE scores, letters of recommendation, or a resumé, although these may be provided if students wish.
